Sure, cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago are more well regarded as great golf destinations, but don’t count Boston out!
Everyone knows the Country Club at Brookline with its stellar history dating back to 1882. But, in my humble opinion, there’s another great golf course in the Boston area worth mentioning — I’m speaking of the George Wright Golf Course.
This Donald Ross designed public golf course opened in Hyde Park, Massachusetts in 1938, a beneficiary of WPA funding as part of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. In 2004 the City of Boston decided to take control of the course with the goal of providing area residents the best golf experience possible at an affordable price.
More recently, George Wright has gained notoriety when, in 2009, it was named the 14th Best Municipal Golf Course in The U.S. by Golfweek and chosen as Golf Digest’s Best Municipal Course in Massachusetts. In the same year, the course was also selected as an MGA Amateur Qualifying Site.
Considering the amount of play the course has hosted, “The Wright,” as it’s known to locals, is in remarkably good condition, highly walkable, with most greens just a few steps away from the next tee. The course is well-maintained with greens routinely on par with nearby upscale, private clubs.
With many praising it as one of the best, most affordable public golf options in the country, a round at George Wright is a great deal for any golfer visiting the Boston area.
