My Favorite South Florida Golf Courses

By Glenn Stephanos

I don’t know about you, but whenever I think about South Florida, the first thing that comes to mind is golf – especially during the many world-class events that are held here. The state is virtually synonymous with “great golf”. But with so many choices, where are the best places to grab a tee time?

Well, here are what I think are the best non-private courses worth playing in South Florida. I tried to make it easy by limiting the selections to a specific region, but with so many great places to play, it was pretty difficult.

For this list, I’ve narrowed it down to my three favorite places to play golf in Florida. Though the options are truly endless with so many great courses across the state.

1. PGA National – Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida:

Since its opening in 1981, immaculately groomed fairways and fast greens have inspired championship play at PGA National Resort. This home of the Honda Classic is famously known for its closing stretch, “The Bear Trap”. The famed 1983 Ryder Cup, thrilling PGA Senior Championships, and exhilarating Honda Classic challenges have made PGA National the stage for many of golf’s famous players and most memorable moments. You would be hard-pressed to find a more demanding golf course in Florida. Maybe it’s time for you to come out and play!

2. The Blue Monster at Doral in Doral, Florida:

I believe it’s safe to say that Doral is a course that needs no introduction. Under the direction of legendary architect Gil Hanse, the historic Blue Monster Course has undergone a thorough redesign and has reemerged as a new golf course reaffirming its stellar reputation as one of the most challenging golf courses in the world. If you have never been there, you might want to put it on the top of your bucket list!

3. Heron Creek Golf and Country Club in North Port, Florida: Heron Creek boasts twenty-seven holes of Championship golf complimented by an elegant clubhouse with fine amenities.

Absolutely the best value between Sarasota and Naples, Heron Creek Golf and Country Club is a premier facility providing world-class hospitality. The minute you step onto the first tee, you’ll experience the exhilaration of playing the brilliant Arthur Hills designed championship course. This challenging (but not intimidating) meticulously maintained course includes variations in elevation that are unique to Southwest Florida, sparkling water features, and the natural beauty of Heron Creek. With the variety of challenges offered by Creek Nine, the Oaks, and Marsh courses, playing golf at Heron Creek is an experience you’ll want to enjoy over and over again.

So, with more than 1,000 golf courses in the Sunshine State, there’s always a place for you to play.

When you get there, tell ‘em Glenn sent you!
